Fun with cryostats and HDRPosted by Matthew (Baton Rouge, United States) on 1 August 2007 in Plant & Nature. Now for something completely different. I am employed as light microscopy specialist, and while I am comfortable with the microscopes, there are still vast areas of which I am a novice. One of these areas is tissue preparation. The past week or so I have been playing around with our cryostat (a machine that can cut frozen biological specimens into very thin, precise slices), mainly cutting leaves from the Arabidopsis plants in the growth chamber and from grasses and ornamental plants outside our building. I also have been experimenting with high dynamic range photography. Well these two areas of interest collided to make this image. This image has NO scientific value, but I thought that it was fairly striking.
